Measure the coldest normal week
A daytime reading after a car engine or heater has warmed the garage can hide the conditions the machine faces overnight. Log temperature and RH near the intended location through a cold week, and inspect whether the space ever approaches freezing.
The manufacturer's operating range is a safety screen, not a promise of equal extraction at every temperature. Condition-specific data at 10°C is more useful than a maximum litres-per-day figure measured in warm, humid air.
Rule out water entering the structure
Check roof edges, door seals, gutters, plumbing, wall staining and water tracked in by vehicles. Standing water and rain penetration must be addressed at source. A garage with continuously open vents or large air gaps may exchange so much outdoor air that a portable appliance runs without achieving a stable target.
Decide what needs protection—tools, stored fabrics, a vehicle or the building itself—and whether local enclosed storage would be more controllable than the entire garage.
Cold-garage comparison
Only the Zambezi and Arete pages in this shortlist publish extraction at 10°C. The DD1's 1°C operating limit is useful, but its headline removal figure remains a 20°C test result.

Drainage is part of the buying decision
A garage machine can stop unnoticed when its tank fills. Continuous drainage needs a secure hose with uninterrupted fall to a suitable drain, protection from being knocked, and an arrangement that will not freeze. An optional pump changes those constraints but adds cost and another failure point.
Follow the manual and electrical safety requirements for an unattended appliance. Do not run improvised extension leads through wet areas or place the unit where a vehicle can strike it.
Compare seasonal energy, not one warm-day test
Desiccant machines can remove useful moisture in cold air but use heaters and therefore often draw more power. A compressor model can be cheaper when the garage remains warmer, yet may run longer or defrost more as temperature falls.
Meter total kWh over comparable cold periods and record the resulting RH. The relevant result is the cost of protecting the space, not the instantaneous wattage or litres collected in different weather.

What type of dehumidifier is best for a cold garage?
A desiccant model is usually the first category to compare when temperatures remain below about 10°C. An insulated or heated garage may make a compressor model more efficient.
Will a dehumidifier work at 1°C?
Some manufacturers state a 1°C operating minimum, but that does not promise high extraction at 1°C. Check condition-specific data and follow frost and drainage guidance.
Can I leave a garage dehumidifier unattended?
Only within the manufacturer's instructions and with safe electrics, stable placement and reliable drainage or tank shut-off. Inspect the setup regularly.
Will it stop tools rusting?
Reducing sustained humidity can lower condensation risk, but corrosion also depends on temperature swings, salts, wet vehicles and direct water. Protect the source and monitor conditions.
