Budget after selected grant
£5,000Before financing, running costs or unquoted workChecks raised by your inputs
- The £12,500 starting figure matches the published 2024/25 median for Boiler Upgrade Scheme air-to-water installations; replace it with a current written quote as soon as possible.
Calculation assumptions
- The main quote and extra-work figures are amounts entered by the visitor and should include VAT where applicable.
- Only extras that are not already included in the main installer quote should be entered.
- The selected grant is a budgeting input, not an eligibility decision or approval.
Ask an MCS-certified installer to complete a heat-loss calculation, confirm grant eligibility and give you an itemised written scope. Check radiators, cylinder, controls, electrics, groundwork, commissioning, VAT and making-good.

Want an exact local price?
A heat-loss calculation, system design and written scope are needed to price the equipment, emitters, cylinder, electrics and commissioning.
How the calculation works
Your quote and extras in. Your selected support amount out.
The calculator adds the main installation figure to any separately entered radiator, cylinder, electrical and other work. It then subtracts the grant amount selected, capped at the total project cost.
The £12,500 starting point is the government's published 2024/25 median for Boiler Upgrade Scheme air-to-water installations. Energy Saving Trust gives a typical air-source figure of around £12,000. Neither is a substitute for an itemised property-specific quote.
What changes the result
Factors worth checking before you decide.
The property's room-by-room heat loss and the chosen flow temperature.
Heat-pump type, capacity, controls and seasonal performance.
Radiator, underfloor-heating or other emitter changes.
Hot-water-cylinder space, size and controls.
Electrical supply, groundwork, pipe routes and access.
Grant eligibility, installer scope, VAT, commissioning and making-good.
Worked examples
See how the assumptions move the answer.
A £12,500 main installation figure with no separate extras and £7,500 selected support.
A £12,500 main figure, £3,000 separately quoted radiator work and £7,500 selected support.
A £15,000 main figure, £2,500 of separate work and the £9,000 support amount—subject to all current scheme conditions.
Common questions
Questions homeowners ask before spending.
How much does an air-source heat pump cost in the UK?
Energy Saving Trust gives a typical air-source installation cost of around £12,000. The government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme business case reports a 2024/25 median of approximately £12,500 for air-to-water installations. A property's heat loss, emitters, cylinder, electrics and access can move a real quote substantially.
How much is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?
For eligible installations in England and Wales, the current published amounts are £7,500 for air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps and £2,500 for eligible residential air-to-air systems. Until March 2027, qualifying off-gas-grid homes replacing oil or LPG can receive an extra £1,500 on eligible air-to-water or ground-source installations.
Does this calculator confirm that I qualify for a grant?
No. The selected grant is only a budgeting input. A participating MCS installer applies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and must confirm the property, technology and installation meet the current rules.
Should radiator and cylinder upgrades be included?
Include them only when they are outside the main installer price. The calculator keeps these allowances separate so you can avoid double-counting and compare itemised scopes.
Is the result an installer quotation?
No. It subtracts the support amount you select from the cost figures you enter. You still need a heat-loss calculation, system design and itemised written quotation.
